Georgia Gwinnett College’s student chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) recently capped a year of impressive firsts with a celebration on GGC’s campus.

AITP members, faculty and staff recently gathered to sign the group’s charter. Graduating senior members signed the charter, and celebrated the occasion with congratulations offered by GGC President Daniel J. Kaufman, who also signed the charter.

The chapter was created in October with 10 members, then grew to 25 and quickly achieved some notable milestones. Lissa Pollacia, AITP faculty advisor and professor of information technology, encouraged several members to attend this spring’s AITP National Collegiate Conference (NCC) in Orlando. This conference featured a range of competitions.  The newly formed GGC team was up against 600 students from 61 other colleges and universities, including Purdue University, Brigham Young University, Texas State University and many more of the finest information technology schools in the country.

The GGC team surprised the competition by winning third place in Java programming and fourth place in database design, besting some of the top teams in the nation.

A number of GGC students passed exams at the conference, moving them steps closer to earning their Certified Computing Professional (CCP) certificates.  Pollacia herself not only passed the CCP exam, but also received the “Top Gun” award for scoring highest among all professors in attendance.

Chia-Chi Lee and Evelyn Brannock, assistant professor of information technology, passed exams that earned them Associate Computing Professional (ACP) certification.

The conference also allowed attendees time to network with information technology professionals.

“Being a modern IT professional is not just about being technically competent,” Pollacia said. “The AITP motto is, ‘No matter how sophisticated the technology, it is still all about people.’ So, we are about helping students achieve and network professionally.”

Students participating in GGC’s chapter of the AITP have conducted fundraisers; volunteered at GGC’s recent Science, Technology and Research Showcase; offered a formal presentation to the Atlanta professional chapter of the AITP; and participated in a major community service project, Give Camp, led by Microsoft Corporation.

“AITP is all about providing opportunities for our students,” said Pollacia. “Our GGC students were hungry for something like this – they have taken it and run with it. They are leaders and go-getters.”

The chapter will soon lose five of its charter members at GGC’s upcoming commencement. Graduating seniors include Kenneth Shepard of Suwanee, Chia-Chi Lee of Buford, Geremy Bell of Snellville, Correy Overton of Buford and Michael Palli of Atlanta.
