Network Monitoring Evolution

Brian M. Jacobs will be discussing the evolution of network monitoring technologies & techniques, and detailing best practices for holistic monitoring of the modern IT ecosystem.

Brian M. Jacobs is the Senior Product Manager for the WhatsUp Gold suite of network management products by Ipswitch. Brian attended Auburn University and the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a Minor in Spanish. He started his professional career as an intern with IBM in the early 1990s, and focused the first ten years of his career on carrier-scale network design and Unix system administration, serving as a senior network engineer for Phoenix Data Systems (acquired by Charter Communications) and senior systems engineer for Lucent Technologies.

Brian has spent the last ten years of his career designing and implementing enterprise and carrier-scale network management systems. Mr. Jacobs worked for the Surveillance department of the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, where he used WhatsUp Gold to monitor what was then the largest digital surveillance system in the United States. Brian also served as chief engineer for the broadband division of LodgeNet, where he implemented the world's largest single deployment of WhatsUp Gold to monitor LodgeNet's entire network infrastructure spanning across more than 2,000 properties.

In his spare time, Brian enjoys tennis, camping, and visiting craft breweries with his wife Jessica.

Jason WilliamsJason Williams will be discussing why network monitoring technologies & techniques are important, and discussing some of the benefits organizations receive by implementing these practices within their environment.

Jason Williams is the WhatsUp Guru and Community Manager for WUGspace.com, WhatsUp's user community. Jason has been part of the WhatsUp Gold family for the past 7 years, holding numerous positions including technical support, quality assurance and product management. Through his YouTube videos and constant activity on WUGspace, Jason spends the majority of his time helping customers and prospects get the most out of their WhatsUp Gold implementation.

Prior to joining the WhatsUp team, Jason spent a number of years in the newspaper industry, implementing and supporting software that automated the publishing of newspaper content to the newspaper's web site. When he isn't trying to figure out another cool use for WhatsUp Gold, Jason is an avid pool player and can usually be found in a local pool hall playing league or trying to match-up against someone. He is also a music addict, so much so that 10 years ago he started and continues to run today, a mobile DJ service specializing in wedding receptions and private parties.

The TAG Story - In seven years the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) has grown from 2k+ members and 4 societies to 12k+ members and 30 societies under the leadership of President Tino Mantella. He tells this incredible success story which is ever continuing.
